Sustainability Project with Chris

Sustainability professor Dr. Jonathan Kaplan from Lyndon State College is a large contributor to the campus green house.
The green house is for the students in the sustainability department to be able to grow crops longer then the Vermont growing season allows. In Vermont the time that the environment allows for people to grow fruits and vegetables is very short. If you don’t have a green house then the earliest you can begin to harvest is August 1st if you are lucky. You can continue the growing until frost appears.
What having a greenhouse does is increase the harvesting time by a couple of months. With a greenhouse you can harvest from May through October where as without a green house you have about a two month shorter growing time. With the extra time provided from the greenhouse the students gain the ability to grow more crops.
This year the green house grew about one hundred pounds of tomatoes. They hope to be able to double or even triple this number next year. The number was low this year due to some unavoidable frost issues which really hampers the growth of the tomatoes. Many of Vermont’s tomatoes are greenhouse grown because of the cold winter which shortens the growing season.
The green house itself was the idea of students a couple of years ago. After the school bought some property on McGoff Hill, the students got started on a plan to build it. The greenhouse which was donated by Dr. Jonathan Kaplan has double layer plastic over it which keeps some heat inside. It is thirty-two feet by twenty-one feet wide. Built by the class the greenhouse can be expanded in four foot increments into a one hundred food long building.
Dr. Kaplan hopes that the building can have heat added to it. They would like to do it with minimal expense so they are currently researching ways to heat the greenhouse with either fossil fuel or other sustainable resources.
The land that the greenhouse is on has a house on it which is currently used by the sustainability program, and a pad for composting food back into the soil. In the future Dr. Kaplan would like to turn part of the house into gardens and add patio space for functions and catering.
Dr. Kaplan also hopes to add two acres of field vegetables in the next couple of years and would love to have grazing animals. He thinks that will take some convincing of the school administrators and faculty though. One other thing the doctor hopes for is to have plant sales in the future when the green house is producing more then it has.

Video Project Synopsis

For the second video project my group will be do conducting an interview with science teach Jon Kaplan. Jon has a had a career revolving around food and he has brought his expertise to the school farm. Kaplan teaches the class that cultivates the farm that is on campus at the McGoff house (the new deans house). The farm has a half acre field along with a greenhouse, his class over the summer also planted herbs outside of the hornets nest for the dinner hall to use or students take freely. The interview will cover what goes on in the class, along with what it takes to keep the school farm running.

Girls Basketball Project with Chris Huppert

After watching the Womens basketball exhibition matchup against the Central Maine Community College I can see what is to come for Hornets season. The team showed heart battling through a tough lose (85 -57) against the Central Maine Community College. After reviewing the stats of the game I feel that the Hornets need to improve on their scoring and offensive rebounds. They made 30 % (21-70) field goal attempts, and 27% (3-11) 3 point attempts which equals to 24 of out 81 attempts that made the basket not front the foul line. While this is not to much different to last seasons stats it shows that the team needs to be more selective with their shots and is how they fall behind during the game. The team also needs to share the ball more, there was to many times when they lost the ball or didn’t make the shot because players were not passing.
The Hornets season will start off with a bang. The team will be traveling to California and participating in the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tip-Off Classic November 15th. This tournament began in 1947 as the “R” Tournament then was changed a few years later to the Redlands Invitational Tournament and changed again to the name today. The Classic became the longest continuously running, eight team basketball tournament west of the Mississippi, until 2012 when the tournament was changed to a four team, two day tournament due to a changes that were being made in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Hornets will be playing the Redlands Bulldogs on the 15th, the Bulldogs finished their 2012 season with a winning record 19-7. The Bulldogs have had a winning record for the past seven seasons. Then on the 16th the Hornets will play Chapman University who also as a winning record from last season 21-6. The Hornets are traveling to a new place, playing new teams and having new experiences. Hopefully only good comes from this trip even it they don’t do so well. These types of experiences are crucial for building team chemistry on and off the court. This Tournament could easily set the tone for the season, however the team should not get discouraged if they don’t win as long as they play as a team and takes smart shots they should walk away proud. At the very least the team gets a trip cross country and Lyndon State gets to put their name in a new place.
If your thinking about going to a home game this year, there are two that should be of interest to you. The December 14th game against Colby Sawyer and January 9th game versus Castleton.

Project 3 Synopsis

For this project Chris and I will be shooting parts of the Lyndon State College basketball game.  The game will be versus the University of Quebec at Montreal on Friday November first.   The game will take place in the Stannard gymnasium on campus.  We write this synopsis together in class.  Chris will be shooting the game. JJ will be doing the editing and then we will write the 400 word text together.  The sound source for the video will be natural sound from the basketball game.  We will narrate major points of the game.

Video in Newspapers: Boston Herald

The Boston Herald is usually my choice when it comes down to choosing a newspaper with video.  One of the reasons for this is because I am from right outside of Boston and most of their videos are local to me.  Most of their videos are anywhere from 1:00 to about 4:00.  The website if very professional looking, it is also very easy to navigate around and find what you want.  The subjects of the videos are interesting to me because I can relate to a majority of them because of me being local.

iCNN Crtique

First look…. I think that the website is very user friendly.  It seems to be easy enough to use and navigate.  I feel like it is an easy easy way to get your name out there if you are a young journalist who has landed on a big story, because CNN is such a big website a whole lot of people can see it.  One thing i do not like is that anybody can post whatever they want.  Even if it is not big news, somebody can post it and a lot of people will still see it.

Fall Foliage in New England

Fall foliage in northern New England competes for some of the best foliage in the country.

There are numerous locations in New England that come to mind when the leaves start to change color. Although there is one area that stands out in partciluar and that is the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

In particular the Kancamagus Highway that connects Lincoln NH to Conway NH. This 34 mile stretch of road that travels in the mountains will show you amazing views, filled with luscious yellows, warm oranges and bold reds. Remember to keep your head out of the trees and pay attention for wildlife especially on the Kancamagus.

Do you happen to be the type of person who likes an adventure? Then hike one of the many peaks in the White Mountains each showcasing their unique views of the White Mountains.

However there is more to Fall foliage than driving the backroads searching for the perfect picture and hiking the tallest peaks. There is a whole culture that comes with Fall foliage in New England.

For most people in New England, the foliage signals the end of the Summer season and the start of the Fall season. For some this means preparing for the winter ahead. For others it means farmers markets, fairs, hayrides, apple orchards, hiking, hot cider, football games, corn mazes and pumpkin carving.

Then there is the group of people that when they think of fall foliage they think just about the colors. The bright yellows, fiery oranges, and deep reds. For some people the colors the fall foliage produces helps people relax.

In its most basic form, thats all Fall foliage is, leaves changing their color. Not all the culture that has gotten intertwined with the Fall season. However it is culture surrounding the Fall season that makes the Fall season enjoyable.

Each person has a different image when Fall foliage is brought up. Some think harvest season, some fair season, and others think about the colors and the feelings that arise from them.

Project 2 Synopsis

For the second group project me and my partner will be making a sound slide show that features wooded areas and the foliage during the Fall season in Vermont. The photos will be accompanied by a music track to give the sound slideshow some emotion and feeling. There will also be voice over descriptions about the photos and the area they were taken, for example where the photo was taken, animals that could be in the area, historical events around the area. The target audience for this sound slideshow would primarily be people coming to the area to see the Fall foliage, people living in the area looking for new places, and photographers looking for places to take pictures of Fall foliage. . This sound slideshow would be interesting to these audiences because the slideshow will show the viewer what they are going to see, and this could help the viewer plan their visit. This slideshow could be posted to local newspaper websites like the Caledonian Record, or anything promoting Vermont

JJ will be taking the photos, Chris wrote the synopisis, JJ and Chris edit and create sound slideshow.

Slideshow and Photogallery Critique

This Alex Ovechkin slideshow was a rather simple piece of work.  It didn’t have many extra features, it seems like the person use Microsoft moviemaker or maybe even something simpler.  The music was also just a basic song found easily on the internet.  Not a very good slideshow at all.

This hockey slideshow was a little better produced then the last one.  It had some different effects to go along with the pictures that were shown to you.  The music was also very upbeat and kept you interested from beginning to end.

This photo gallery was great.  Obviously not as good as a slideshow with music would be but it was still awesome.  Great pictures and a very easy to use website.  I may use this website to create one of my own.
